WASHINGTON, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- American swimmer Ryan Lochte made an impressive comeback by competing in the 200-meter individual medley during a time trial at the Phillips 66 National Championships at Stanford University on Wednesday.

He touched the line in one minute 57.88 seconds. His best time since Rio 2016 was 1:58.90.

After three years of ups and downs, the Olympic champion finally earned berth at the U.S. Olympic trials after being involved in a fake police report in 2016 which ended up with a 10-month suspension, and sidelined for 14 months owing to an infusion of vitamin B-12 above the allowed limit last year.

Lochte, a record-holder of multiple events and the second-most decorated swimmer in Olympic history (second only to Michael Phelps), has taken part in the 100 butterfly, 100 and 200 backstroke and 200 and 400 IM this week, and says he's been pondering which events to participate in at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

"It's been a long three years but it's good to be back, get on those blocks and race again," said Lochte.

"I'm not trying to prove anything to anyone. My big goal is 2020 and to reach the podium. I do it for me and my family." Enditem
