SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- A young girl was wounded Thursday after militants and the army exchanged fire in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

According to officials, the militants fired upon army camp at Khudwani area of Kulgam district, about 60 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"This morning militants fired at an army camp in Khudwani, which was duly retaliated by troops present there," a police official said.

"In the brief exchange of fire between the two sides a girl... of Wanigund village was wounded."

Locals said the girl was removed to the nearest hospital.

Reports said following the exchange of fire the militants managed to escape from the spot.

Government forces cordoned off the area to nab the militants. Searches in the area were going on.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
