SYDNEY, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Mexican golfer, Abraham Ancer, claimed the Australian Open in Sydney on Sunday, finishing five shots clear of the rest of the field at 16 under par.

The 27-year old added his name to the Stonehaven Cup trophy alongside greats like Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer and Greg Norman.

"I'm on cloud nine right now - it's been a phenomenal week," Ancer said.

"Obviously I did a little bit of research and the names on this trophy are absolutely incredible - Jack Nicklaus, recently Spieth, McIlroy - a lot of names that are extremely recognized in the world of golf and I'm really, really happy that my name's going to be there now."

Ancer, who is now ranked 60th in the world, beat out local talent Dimitrios Papadatos and Jake McLeod, although all three of the top performers have guaranteed themselves a start in next year's British Open in Northern Ireland.

However it was Ancer who truly stood out when it counted, collecting birdies at the fourth, eighth and ninth holes to comfortably control the final day of play, and claim what is only his second ever professional tour win.

Both McIlroy and Spieth went on to win two majors the year after claiming the Australian Open and Ancer is hopeful he might follow a similar path. .
