HAIKOU, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese kite surfer Wu Jianggang was injured with a cut on left back, which required eight stitches, in the kiteboarding qualification of 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) here on Monday.

The competition became fiercer while wind was growing stronger on waters close to Yazhou Bay as China's Wu had to quit after he was injured accidentally and went to a local hospital for treatment during the fifth round race in his group.

"So I guess I can't attend the games later on," Wu said after he was back from the hospital.

"I didn't play well in yesterday's games, because I was a little bit nervous. But there is still hope that Chinese surfers can get qualified for YOG," added Wu, believing his compatriot Zhang Haoran can make it.

After three rounds of competitions by Monday, 18-year-old Zhang ranked second in men's division and the same place for China's Li Kewen in women's division.

The event will wrap up on Tuesday, deciding the qualifiers from the 100 players representing 32 countries and regions to compete at the Buenos Aires Summer Youth Olympics.
