NEW DELHI, June 19 (Xinhua) -- At least four people were killed and several others suffered burn injuries Tuesday in a devastating fire inside a hotel in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The fire broke out at Charbagh locality near a railway station in Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

"A fire broke out this morning inside a hotel here and we have rescued more than 50 people from the building but unfortunately four people have died and several others have suffered burns," S. Pandey, a senior police officer posted in Lucknow told media.

"The people who suffered burns or complained of breathing problem have been hospitalized."

Following the blaze, firefighters were rushed to the spot to douse flames.

Eyewitnesses said the fire started from basement of the hotel and spread in the entire building, besides spreading to an adjacent hotel.

"The fire has been contained and searches are going on," the officer said.

Preliminary inquiry indicated short circuit may have caused the fire. However, police said the cause of fire was being ascertained.??
