Paul Ryan faces backlash for tweet lauding GOP tax cuts

      Source: Xinhua    2018-02-05 19:10:30

WASHINGTON, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan is under fire on social media again after he published -- and then deleted -- a post on Twitter Saturday lauding a 1.5 U.S. dollar weekly wage hike of a public school secretary.

The tweet was meant to promote the benefits of a massive tax cut passed by the GOP in December, which was Ryan's main focus in Congress.

Retweeting and citing an AP report, Ryan said, "A secretary at a public high school in Lancaster, PA said she was pleasantly surprised her pay went up 1.50 dollars a week ... she said (that) will more than cover her Costco membership for the year."

      A basic-level Costco membership costs 60 dollars a year.

The tweet instantly drew criticism and open mockery online for it showed how out of touch Ryan is with lives of ordinary Americans.

Nancy Pelosi, the House Minority Leader who recently referred to the tax cut benefits for middle income families as "crumbs" tweeted Sunday, "Paul Ryan deleted his embarrassing tweet of a blatant admission because he and Republicans don't want you to know the truth: the #GOPTaxScam is a gift to corporate America and the top 1% at your expense."

He also doesn't want you to know he got 500,000 dollars from the Koch family, Pelosi said in the same tweet, referring to a report about Ryan in January.

Ryan's office has not made any comment so far.
